What These Seattle Records Tell You

Seattle ranks #201 of our 208 city lists by number of active registrations. The most common registered specialties here are roofing (12). 0 registrations expire within the next 90 days, so check the date again before signing a contract.

A "bond on file" means Washington L&I lists an uncancelled surety bond for that registration. Washington law requires a $30,000 bond for general contractors and $15,000 for specialty contractors (RCW 18.27.040). Electrical contractors are licensed under a separate L&I program, so their liability insurance is not part of the construction-contractor insurance dataset.

How Long These Seattle Roofers Have Been Registered

The median business in this list has held its current Washington registration for 8 years, and 6 of the 12 have held it for 10 years or more. The oldest registration date on file is Dec 21, 1977, while 2 registered in the last 12 months. The registration date is when this registration took effect; a business may have traded earlier under another name or number, so ask how long the company has worked in Seattle.

This list only includes businesses whose L&I specialty is Roofing. Many companies doing this work in Seattle are registered as general contractors instead, and 2,643 general contractors list a Seattle address. A general contractor registration is valid for this kind of work, so a missing name here does not mean the business is unregistered.

What Washington Law Requires of Every Business on This List

A Washington contractor registration is valid for two years and must be renewed on or before its expiry date (RCW 18.27.060). If the contractor's bond or insurance policy is cancelled, the registration is suspended automatically on the date of the cancellation, which is why a row's status can change between our updates. The required insurance, or an assigned account in its place, must cover $50,000 for property damage, $100,000 for injury or death to one person and $200,000 for injury or death to more than one person (RCW 18.27.050). All advertising that shows a contractor's name or address must also show its current registration number (RCW 18.27.100), so the number on a flyer or website should match the License # column above.

Homeowners with a breach-of-contract claim against the bond must file suit within two years of the date the work was substantially completed or abandoned (RCW 18.27.040). It is a gross misdemeanor to advertise, bid or work as a contractor without an active registration, or while one is suspended or revoked (RCW 18.27.020).
