How to Read These Lists

Each city list includes only registrations whose status is ACTIVE in the L&I file dated Oct 30, 2026. Smaller markets such as Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane often have fewer than a hundred registered roofers, which makes it quicker to compare every option.

Not every Washington city has a list yet: we publish a city once it has enough active registrations to be useful, and add more cities in stages.

How Roofers Are Licensed in Washington

A business that installs or repairs roofs for others is a construction contractor in Washington and must register with L&I under RCW chapter 18.27. Washington has no separate state roofing exam, so the registration, the surety bond and the liability insurance are the state checks available to you, and our lists show all three for every roofer.

Registration

Our roofer lists include businesses whose L&I specialty is Roofing. Many roofing companies register as general contractors instead, which lets them do more than one trade; those businesses appear in our general contractor lists and are equally valid for roofing work.

Bond and Insurance

A specialty registration requires a $15,000 surety bond (RCW 18.27.040) and general liability insurance (RCW 18.27.050); a general contractor needs a $30,000 bond. If either lapses, the registration cannot stay active.

Before You Sign

A roof is usually one of the largest single payments a homeowner makes, so confirm the registration does not expire mid-job, ask whether your city requires a permit for the work, and get the materials, tear-off and warranty in writing.

What Our Data Shows About Roofers

Across our 3 city lists, 49 roofers hold an active registration in the L&I file dated Oct 30, 2026. Of these, 12 (24%) registered in the last 12 months and 3 have a renewal due within 90 days. 98% have a surety bond on file, 100% have liability insurance on file in the construction-contractor data, and 73% are registered as LLCs.

The specialties listed most often for these businesses are Roofing (49).

Bond and insurance coverage in our roofer lists is close to universal. Because many roofers register as general contractors, a roofer missing from these lists may still be properly registered: search the name on L&I Verify.

How to Check a Roofing Contractor Before You Hire

  1. Find the business in a city list below or on L&I Verify and confirm the status is ACTIVE.
  2. Check that the bond and insurance are on file and the expiry date falls after your project.
  3. Ask whether your city requires a permit for the roof work and who will apply for it.
  4. Put the materials, tear-off, cleanup and warranty terms in the written contract.
  5. Avoid large upfront deposits; tie payments to completed stages.
